Why do I need a Spanish NIF to register for packaging EPR?

MITECO's register and the power-of-attorney register both work by Spanish NIF. A foreign company gets one starting with N from the AEAT, through a representative with a Spanish NIF or NIE.

Quick answer

Because every step identifies your company by a Spanish NIF. MITECO's FAQ and its August 2026 note give the same first step for producers established outside Spain: obtain a Spanish NIF, which for a foreign legal person starts with the letter N, from the Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria (AEAT), requested through a representative who holds a Spanish NIF or NIE. The digital representative certificate is issued against that NIF, and the power-of-attorney register (REA) requires one too under Order PCM/1384/2021, so MITECO calls the NIF indispensable whichever route you take.
